My MG42 BuildI'm basically doing the Pirate build method, documented here: http://www.salt6.com/pirates%20build.htm I don't want to recycle information about his build details, but I'll cover a few gotchas that I encounter on the way. I've also performed some unique mods that no one has, to my knowledge, previously attempted or at least published. Information about those mods are also contained here... specifically, adapting the "MG2" feed tray to accept "war-era" and "post-war era" 8mm drums; and modifying a G3 FCG for use in the -42 grip housing.
Build OverviewThe transformation of the parts kit into a functional, safe, legal, semi-auto gun required the following steps, listed in a relatively linear order:
That's it! Easy, huh? :) You will need to have access to a TIG or MIG welder; an ARC welder probably won't work. It goes without saying that a well-stocked machine shop is always helps. I've used the dremel for quite a bit on my build, and plenty of cut-off disks and sanding wheels were used. Update May '07 - she fires again! I redid the firing pin and eliminated some binding issues. I ordered a new main spring and hope to test again when it arrives. I may need to do some more firing pin work, but for the most part she is running more consistently than ever. Update Dec '06 - she fires! The firing pin needs to be polished due to light primer strikes, but she has actually fired shots! Stay tuned, another update will be made after my next range visit.
