Rear Stock
This is my experiment to make an AK-100 folding stock rear hinge block from scratch. Conclusion - you can do it but machining from a solid piece may be easier.
CuttingI started with 2" x 1/8" bar stock from HD and traced the pattern directly from the hinge... I plan to make a paste-on template later. Note how I aligned the squared edge of the steel to the rear of the hinge block:
WeldingWhat you're looking at is the setup to weld a plate of 1" wide stock (again from HD) perpendicular to the sides, which provides the rear section. I started with 1" square piece of stock (the rusty piece) that I'm using for alignment purposes. That gives me a parallel surface between the sides. The squared end gives me the 2nd edge to true. Underneath is 3 - 1/8" parallels. I could just as easily have cut some 3/8" stock to shim. The parallel shims are there only to raise the 1" workpiece to the correct position: The rear piece is tack welded into position. The trunion on the left is the real thing to compare the surfaces. Welded. I'm using my HF $100 MIG welder. It does an "OK" job for something this small. I may try silver soldering a different one together, as silver solder should hold this quite nicely. This sucker got red-hot so I'm going to let it cool off some before I continue :)
Now to add the top section. I made the center piece too high, so I milled it down for the top section, which is 1.125" high I had some scrap laying around and took out the corner so it will be millable into both the top section and the top hinge: Welded, and cooling. I also found some scrap to use for the bottom section that holds the buttstock in place. I welded generous beads as I am going to mill this down to shape. |
